Johnson County Community College (JCCC) needed to manage the daylight entering their newly renovated Student Center. They chose BNIM and JE Dunn to help solve this problem. The Facility Systems team was asked to be involved with this interesting and complicated project. We provided the motorized shades throughout the facility, including monumental shades to cover the clerestory window above the lobby.
BNIM wanted to ensure the shades matched the design intent of the building. The windows were an important focal point of the space. They needed large scale, motorized shades with the capability to cover very long spans of windows. BNIM specified the MagnaShade product by Mecho to solve the problem. The MagnaShades would provide better aesthetics than using several smaller shades over the same span of windows. Given the height and size of the windows, this posed several challenges for the project team.
The MagnaShades weighed approximately 400 lbs., and the largest one measured 32’ wide and 20’ tall. Each shade required multiple manlifts and several installers to get them into place. We collaborated closely with JE Dunn to manage the risk and coordinate the installation with the other trades on the project.
With these improvements, JCCC was able to manage the daylight entering the building more efficiently. The shades will increase the energy efficiency for the space and result in HVAC cost savings over time.
